The launch of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus this fall gave Apple some new momentum in sales according to Kantar, but most of these sales have been from users either upgrading from older iPhone models or switching from Samsung Android devices, which goes to show how well Windows Phone is putting up a fight against the latest device to come out of Cupertino.

In the European Union, Windows Phone dropped from 9.2% market share in EU in September to 8.7% In Great Britain, Windows Phone saw its biggest drop ever with a loss of 4.3 percent, which is also where iPhone 6 models saw the biggest gain. Even so, this decline is not a result of unit sales of Windows Phone going down, but rather of a smartphone market expanding faster than WP market share as a result of the iPhone 6 launch.

Another heavy hitter was China, where Windows Phone saw a 3.0 percent decline in overall market share, with another 2.3 percent decline in overall market share in Italy and 2.2 percent loss in France.

It wasn’t all on the negative side, though. Germany and Spain saw a combined increase of 1.1 percent overall even with the new iPhone’s launch, and as demand dies down over the next few months and the dust starts to settle, we’ll have a better idea of where Windows Phone ranks in the great swing of things.
